South Street Bridge

"The City of Philadelphia has notified Penn that the South Street Bridge will close for reconstruction beginning Monday, December 8, 2008. The demolition and rebuilding of the bridge requires the complete closure of the structure between Convention Avenue and 27th Street, including the on-and-off-ramps connecting South Street and I-76.The entire project is expected to take up to 24 months to complete. There will be no access to the entrance and exit ramps of the Schuylkill Expressway (I-76) for the duration of the project."

Can't they build the new bridge next to the old one? this is horrifically stupid. 76 is already a disaster. this shan't help.

I don't see how building it next to the old one would help. They would have to completely re-do South St and its ramps which would be an even greater nightmare.

Anyway, i dig the new design.

24 months? i remember they closed a little shit bridge in Media when i was in high school and were supposed to redo it in a year or two. not sure what happened, but that shit is still closed?

i am guessing 3 years, and i hope they don't make the exit ramp a left-lane exit again, people are not that smart, and only get worse when it comes to driving, so give the morons a break and put the exit on the right like all the other exits.
