Ricky Gervais is the creator slash writer of the Office. He has written for The Simpsons, The (American) Office, and yes Extras. He was involved with a documentary called Ricky Gervais meets Larry David. I've never seen it but it sounds amazing. He also has a podcast called The Ricky Gervais show.
