I went to see Persepolis friday night, and it was great. I recommend going to see it in the theatre. It was a wonderful story, but i was really blown away by the animation.
Here are some other cartoons that I really like:
The Hedgehog In The Fog
Directed by Yuriy Norshteyn. Written by Sergei Grigoryevich Kozlov.
This was voted No. 1 Animated film of all time in the "All time animation best 150 in Japan and Worldwide" contest in Tokyo, 2003.
The fog effects were created by putting a very thin piece of paper on top of the scene and slowly lifting it up toward the camera frame-by-frame until everything behind it became blurry and white.
Fantasmagorie
By Emile Cohl. Made in 1908.
This is considered the first fully animated film ever made.
Emile was called "The Father of the Animated Cartoon" and "The Oldest Parisian". He started his career as a caricaturist
Little Nemo
Created by Winsor McCay in 1911.
McCay was the first to do animations that required a team of artists and painstaking attention for detail. Each frame was drawn on paper; which invariably required backgrounds and characters to be redrawn and animated.
I used to have this really worn out Bootleg VHS copy of Fritz the Cat and Heavy Traffic and i thought it was the coolest thing ever:
Fritz the Cat (1972)
Heavy Traffic (1973)
Both of these are by Ralph Bakshi. They are awesome and if you have never seen them then you are missing out on a great piece of pop culture history.
Ralph later did Cool World starring Brad Pitt and Kim Basinger.
Intro to Catch Me If You Can
Created by Nexus Productions.
Wacky Races
Hannah Barbera has so many great characters. Most of them were in wacky races.
Thats all I can think of off the top of the dome piece, i know im leaving a ton out.
Go see Persepolis!!
