OBAMA LOVES OMAR

Sorry Yazzer, I had to do it.

Obama: I gotta say Omar’s a great character. That’s not an endorsement.
Coolican: (Laughing.) Uh oh, you’re making national news here.
Obama: Exactly. That is not an endorsement. He is not my favorite person. But he’s a fascinating character.
Coolican: And there’s a real life story behind it, too.
Obama: He’s this gay gangster who only robs drug dealers, and then gives back. You know, he’s sort of a Robin Hood. And he’s the toughest, baddest guy on this show, but he’s gay, you know. And it’s really interesting. It’s a fascinating character.

HERE is a link to the Las Vegas Sun article this quote is from.

The Wire--Through The Thugs Eyes

Why is it that this blog is consumed with all things Wire? I love the show, but something about it makes people feel as though they have to commit whole heartily to it. Most times when something is cultishly popular there is a backlash. I'm still waiting for it with The Wire. Perhaps people feel a competitive urge to prove how much they like the show. The guantlet was thrown down by t.v. critics who declared it, 'BEST SHOW EVER.' Now we feel like we have to up the ante. 'Best Show, eh? I say it is the best THING ever! Take that!'

That's not why I'm here, today, though. Over at the Freakonomics blog they have a fella watching the Wire with real life street toughs and recording their thoughts. There are season 5 spoilers, so if you have not watched it yet, maybe wait, if you have watched the fifth season peepth this shit:

Dont Go Chasing Waterfalls

"An artist's rendering of the New York City Waterfalls project, proposed by Danish artist Olafur Eliasson, is seen here in this undated handout photo. Four giant waterfalls will be erected in New York for three months this summer in a public art project city officials hope will create $55 million in extra tourism revenue for the Big Apple. The waterfalls, including one that will fall from the famed Brooklyn Bridge, are the brainchild of Eliasson. They will cost $15 million, to be funded by private donations to New York's Public Art Fund."

THIS might be kind of cool. I'll check it out regardless.

R.I.P Bobby Fischer

IQ = 187 (that's where the police code comes from)
Bobby is the byname of Robert James Fischer, an American chess master who became the youngest grandmaster in history when he received the title in 1958. His youthful intemperance and brilliant playing drew the attention of the American public to the game of chess, particularly when he won the world championship in 1972. Fischer learned the moves of chess at age 6 and at 16 dropped out of high school to devote himself fully to the game. In 1958 he won the first of many American championships. In world championship candidate matches during 1970–71, Fischer won 20 consecutive games before losing once and drawing three times to former world champion Tigran Petrosyan of the Soviet Union in a final match won by Fischer. In 1972 Fischer became the first native-born American to hold the title of world champion when he defeated Boris Spassky of the Soviet Union in a highly publicized match held in Reykjavík, Iceland. In doing so, Fischer won the $156,000 victor’s share of the $250,000 purse.

2005 - On his first full day of freedom after nine months’ detention in Japan, Bobby Fischer said Friday he was happy to be in Iceland and denounced the United States as “evil.”
